Sensibly Seasonal

img_0342.jpgThis is a topic that is dear to my heart and particularly useful in my current life.  In my last year here in Bulgaria I have learned more than ever the joys and practicality of eating seasonally.  This is not a new concept, to focus produce consumption on what is locally available at any given time, but it is one that many Americans have abandoned in the light of the incredible variety of global produce that is available to us year-round.  The difficulty is that this type of consumption is really not the most sustainable, and requires an incredible amount of energy in transportation alone.  It also limits the variety in any particular fruit or vegetable to those that can withstand traveling and storage, leading to less diversity in agricultural production.  In my opinion, it also diminishes the particular joy of awaiting and enjoying certain foods at their peak, and then going without them during the rest of the year.  I have found my enjoyment of the berry seasons here much heightened by the fact that they are finite and that I can only purchase them when they are at their very best.  Of course during the winter there is less choice, but there is still enough variety to eat a healthy diet, especially when supplemented by frozen or canned items put up in the summer and fall.  So again, not a new concept, just an “old” way of life that I think is worth our thoughtful reconsideration.  One way to eat more seasonally is to partake in the thousands of local farmer’s markets that are sprinkled throughout the country.  Since they focus on local agriculture, if they have it, it’s in season!  See the links section for a site that can help you to find a farmer’s market near you.  And while it’s not always easy to eat seasonally, now as fall approaches is probably to easiest time to start.
